Turn Photos Into Pencil Sketch Drawings

With the use of Adobe Photoshop you can easily turn any photo into an artistic pencil sketch drawing. You will learn how to do just that in this tutorial. Below is the original photo I’ve chosen to use for this lesson.

Step 1: First of all we’ll want to begin by duplicating the background layer which can be done rather quickly by pressing “CTRL+J” on your keyboard, or “Command+J” if you’re using a MAC. Once your new layer has been created deselect the visibility icon on the original background layer.

Step 2: We will now proceed by converting the duplicated layer to monochrome. From the menu go to “Image -> Adjustments -> Channel Mixer” and click on the box near the bottom to select Monochrome. You may want to play with the RGB sliders to get your image looking just the way you want, adjusting the overal contrast and brightness.

Step 3: Create the sketch by going to “Filter -> Stylize -> Find Edges”. No need to panic if your image appears to look odd, we’ll correct that quickly.

Step 4: Select “Edit -> Fade Find Edges”. You’ll want to do this immediately after the previous step otherwise this option will be ghosted and unavailable. Now, to make the sketch nice and soft, in the dialog box you are prompted with select Linear Dodge for the Blend Mode and choose 50% for Opacity.

Step 5: Click on the Marquee tool or press “M” on the keyboard and make a box around the image, roughly 10 or 15 pixels from the edges as shown in the image below. Then go to “Select -> Modify -> Feather” and enter a radius of 10.

Step 6: You’ll want the marquee or marching ants to select the outside of the photo so choose “Select -> Inverse”. Now fill the selected area with white. There you go, you have now successfully turned your photograph into an artistic sketch drawing.
