2011Photoshop Colorful Text Effect Tutorial
Welcome fellow design junkies. It’s been a while since I whipped up a Photoshop tutorial so I figured now is as good a time as any. Today I’m going to cover how to create a colorful text effect. It’s a basic Photoshop tutorial which requires very little experience and takes just a few easy steps. Hope you enjoy it!
Step 01
First of all we need to begin by creating a new document. It can be any size you desire, in my case I’m using 800×300 pixels. Once you have your new Photoshop document created fill the background with black and type your text in the center.

Step 02
Now let’s add a nice gradient to the text layer. Right click on your text layer and go to Blending Options > Gradient Overlay. Deselect “Align with layer” and make sure your angle is at zero. I chose 5 different colors and spaced them evenly between one another. The properties I chose are as follows:
Color 1: #0297ff
location: 0
Color 2: #24bb0f
Location: 25
Color 3: #ffff00
location: 50
Color 4: #ff6d00
location: 75
Color 5: #7a134b
location: 100
Below is an image for your reference.

You should now have a document that looks something like this:

Step 03
Next, duplicate your text layer twice. Each layer has it’s own purpose so it’s important that you create 2 new copies. You’ll then need to rasterize each of your duplicated text layers. In order to do this, from the menu select Layer > Rasterize > Type.
Step 04
Make sure your original text layer remains above the duplicated layers. On the very bottom layer go to Filer > Blur > Guassian Blur and choose 50 as the value for the Radius. On the second duplicated layer go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and enter 90 as the value for the Radius.
Step 05
Create a new layer above all of the other layers including your original text layer. Then go to Filter > Render > Clouds. Afterwards make sure the blend mode you select is “Soft Light”

Step 06
This is the final step. Hooray! Almost there. Now for your original text layer, right click and select Blending Options > Drop Shadow. Your settings should be 120 degrees for the angle, black for the color, 75% opacity, a distance of 5 and size of 6.
Conclusion
Congratulations, you’ve successfully completed this tutorial. If all went well hopefully your document looks similar to the one below.
