Change The Color Of A Vehicle In Photoshop

In this Photoshop tutorial you will learn how to change the color of a vehicle in just a few easy steps. Once you have a photo selected and open in Photoshop we can begin. One important note is that the main image layer must be unlocked if it isn’t already. You can see if this is the case or not by opening your Layers tab.

Here’s the original photo I’ve decided to use for this tutorial. You can see right away it’s a nice vibrant color which is a lot easier to work with.

Step 1 First of all we need to trace the vehicle and we will do so using the pen tool. There are a few different ways of tracing an image and if you prefer to use a different method that’s fine too.

Once you’ve selected the pen tool make sure “Paths” is chosen instead of the default “Shape Layers”. Choose a starting point and begin tracing the entire outline of the car. It’s much easier to trace the vehicle by zooming in about 300% or more. You can see an example of where I started in the photo below.

Step 2 Once you’ve completely traced the vehicle you will now want to right click on the image and choose “Make Selection”. Add a feather radius of 3 as shown in the example below.

Step 3 First of all while your path is selected press “CTRL+C” to copy and then “CTRL+V” to paste so you have a duplicate copy of the layer.

Step 4 Now the real fun begins where we can start playing with and customizing the color of the vehicle. With your new layer selected press “CTRL+U” on the keyboard to bring up the Hue/Saturation window. Move the hue and saturation levels until you are happy with the color, in this example I chose a vibrant orange but you can make your vehicle blue, green, yellow or any color you desire. Chances are you won’t want to adjust the Lightness levels but of course that’s entirely up to you and depends on the desired effect you’re looking for.

So there you have it, you can see how fun and easy it is to change the color of a vehicle, or any object for that matter with a few simple steps using Photoshop. Below you can see my final image. If you have any other questions feel free to contact me.
